men·tor (men-ter)
- noun: a wise and trusted counselor,
teacher; an influential sponsor or
supporter. Requirements of Successful Mentoring An often cited definition of mentoring, and one we prefer, is: "...an experienced person, the Mentor, and a less experienced one, the Mentee, for the primary purpose of developing the Mentee's capabilities in his or her chosen enterprise." Successful mentoring requires mutual faith, trust and respect in each other which can develop after a few one-on-one relationships but, sometimes, can take an extended period of time. How Much Should We as Your Mentor be Involved? The extent of our mentoring is based upon your needs, education and experience. A mentor must be able to recognize when mentoring is in danger of becoming supervision. Our efforts are based directly upon your needs and your willingness and ability to perform the many necessary tasks yourself. It is our function to advise and assist you as your needs dictate. Not only does this increase the probability of a successful small business start-up, it also helps you to learn the many basic foundations of business organization and operation. Our Fees are Determined By You Much of our mentoring is provided to you at no charge. If there are charges, our fees are based upon the tasks we are called upon to perform. This allows you to be in full control of your costs (which is also a prerequisite to successfully operating a business). Different people have different talents and abilities, education and experience. We might start giving you a lot of help and, as you get into it, you might be able to take over more and more of the effort (which, of course, will decrease our fees). We have been helping people start their own businesses since 1976. We have even, on invitation, stepped back in to help them correct mistakes in management. We're here to help, — that's what we do and we enjoy it. Starting and Running a Small Business is Gratifying We, and the media, often mention that starting a new small business is extremely burdensome. True, it can be but it doesn't have to be. Any successful business person will tell you that challenges can be fun as well as educating if met with the right attitude. Entrepreneurship can and should be a very gratifying experience and should be enjoyed. Isn't that one of the main reasons you want to go into business for yourself? Another old and well worn adage, but so very true, is, "When the going gets tough the tough get going." Make Your Decision — And Stick With It It is up to you. Carefully consider what you may be getting into and how prepared you and your family are, physically, psychologically and financially, to complete your effort. Then, when you make your decision, be prepared to stick to it. |
